Curcumin Could Reduce Hormone Therapy Breast Cancer Risk

curcuminA new study shows that Curcumin, a popular Asian spice from the turmeric root, might protect women from breast cancer who are taking estrogen and progestin (synthetic progesterone) used as hormone replacement therapy following menopause.

Previous studies found that postmenopausal women who have taken a combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy have increased their risk of developing progestin-accelerated breast tumors. Now, University of Missouri researchers have found that curcumin, a popular Indian spice derived from the turmeric root, could reduce the cancer risk for women after exposure to hormone replacement therapy.

“Approximately 6 million women in the United States use hormone replacement therapy to treat the symptoms of menopause,” said Salman Hyder, the Zalk Endowed Professorship in Tumor Angiogenesis and professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center. “This exposure to progestin will predispose a large number of post-menopausal women to future development of breast cancer. The results of our study show that women could potentially take curcumin to protect themselves from developing progestin-accelerated tumors.”

Pancreatic Cancer Spiked by Milk and Meat

By Steven Reinberg, HealthDay Reporter
Healthday News

tbone steakFat from red meat and dairy products can increase your risk for pancreatic cancer, researchers from the U.S. National Cancer Institute report.

The study found that people who ate high amounts of saturated fats had 36 percent higher rates of pancreatic cancer than did those who ate low amounts.

Pancreatic cancer, which is usually fatal, is the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Various risk factors for developing the disease have been identified, including smoking, diabetes and obesity. Some studies have also linked dietary fat to increased risk, but researchers said that data had been inconclusive.

However, Rachael Z. Stolzenberg-Solomon, from the institute’s cancer epidemiology and genetics division, said the new study

“…found an association between high fat intake and pancreatic cancer risk – specifically, high fat from animal foods.”

“These findings are in line with the dietary guidelines for Americans to reduce the amount of fat they eat,” she said. “Reducing fat may reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.

The report is published online June 26 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Vitamins May Reduce Risk of Uterine Cancer

Increased intakes of vitamins C, E and beta-carotene reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus, according to a new review and meta-analysis.

Writing in Cancer Causes and Control, US scientists report that increasing key antioxidant vitamins was associated with a measurable reduction in the risk of endometrial cancer:

  • Beta-carotene – an increase of just one milligram (mg) of beta-carotene for every 1,000 calories of daily diet, was associated with a 12% reduction in the risk of endometrial cancer
  • Vitamin C – an increase of 50 mg’s of vitamin C per 1,000 calories, reduced the risk by 15%
  • Vitamin E – in increase of 5 mg’s of vitamin E per 1,000 calories of diet reduced the risk by 9%

Trial drugs 'reverse' Alzheimer's

US scientists say they have successfully reversed the effects of Alzheimer’s with experimental drugs.

The drugs target and boost the function of a newly pinpointed gene involved in the brain’s memory formation. In mice, the treatment helped restore long-term memory and improve learning for new tasks, BBC News reports.

The same drugs – HDAC inhibitors – are currently being tested to treat Huntington’s disease and are on the market to treat some cancers. They reshape the DNA scaffolding that supports and controls the expression of genes in the brain.

Breast Cancer Breakthrough

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All over the country women are out in droves to raise awareness of this disturbing and oftentimes, fatal epidemic.

We have an answer. We have uncovered research that shows how to reduce the incidence of cancer by a staggering 76%.

Yes, 76%!

Every 24 Seconds Someone is Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

While billions of dollars of government and special donor research money has been spent fighting this dreadful and often fatal disease, the odds are that a shocking one out of seven women will develop this disease. Breast cancer has become the second largest cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer, and the leading cause of death for women between 35 and 54.

Ever since the so called “war on cancer” was declared, more women have died of breast cancer than the total number of Americans who lost their lives in World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, COMBINED!

Clearly we are in the midst of a breast cancer epidemic. (Read my  article, “Breast Cancer Is Stealing Our Best & Brightest” from Feb 2007.)

By the time a tell-tale lump is detected in the breast, there already an estimated 45 billion cancer cells present, and some of these malignant cells have metastasized to other parts of the body.

There is hope – a light at the end of a dark tunnel. Read the excerpt below from the June 2007 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Vitamin D could save your life!

Think you’ve heard all there is to know about miraculous Vitamin D-3? I did.

And then someone sent me a full, in-depth report that really opened my eyes and made me, a passionate advocate for Vitamin D-3 for years, literally double my daily intake! So should you, or so WILL YOU, when you read this extraordinary report.

Vitamin D Deficiency is Becoming Alarmingly Common

Ever since the misguided medical advice to avoid sunshine (which makes over 90% of our Vitamin D), health problems associated with low levels have skyrocketed.

Vitamin D is not only a vitamin, but also an important hormone, with deficiencies causing widespread problems.

In fact, Vitamin D deficiency in the United States alone:

  • Is estimated to causes severe immune dysfunction, causing 85,000 extra cancer deaths a year
  • Increases osteoporosis
  • Increases pain in chronic pain conditions
  • Not only increases osteoporosis, but also the risk of falling
  • Significantly increases the risk of Multiple Sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes

Vitamin D treatment can also improve lung function and help people with asthma, while also decreasing the risk of heart disease, hypertension and stroke.

Because Vitamin D is stored in the fatty tissue (fat soluble) instead of being washed out in the urine (water soluble), it is possible to overdose if you get too much. This scares people away from getting the optimal dose, even though 10 times our current RDA (also known as “Ridiculously Low Allowance”) of 400IU’s a day is safe.

For those with decreased bone density, the dosage recommended is from 2000-4000 units a day. Otherwise, 1000-2000 units a day is optimal. Most importantly, remember to go for walks and get your sunshine.

Sunshine is good for you! For optimal health, avoid sunburn – but not your sunshine. Get 15 minutes of sunshine on your near-naked body at mid-day, when the sun is at its highest.

Vitamin D Deficiency is very common. Amazing as it may seem, with so many nutritional products being consumed these days, Vitamin D deficiency is rampant. This nutrient deficiency is critical, causing tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths each year in the United States alone. Because of this, and the deadly recommendation to avoid being out in the sun without sunscreen, Vitamin D deficiency is very real and getting worse.

Alzheimer's – the Cause and the Answer?

Last month we kicked off an on-going series on the debilitating diseases that are destroying our way of life here in America. The first in this series was a two-part article on Alzheimer’s.

Hidden away in the concluding chapter was a nugget of pure gold, that could be the greatest discovery yet in fighting Alzheimer’s and most importantly, preventing it from happening. I decided to devote a full article to this extraordinary “nugget of gold” because it holds so much hope and promise for each and every one of us, particularly for those trying to cope with this terrible and tragic disease.

Vitamin D may lower Breast Cancer Risk

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor WASHINGTON (Reuters)

Breast cancer patients with lower levels of vitamin D were far more likely to die and far more likely to have their cancer spread than women with normal levels, Canadian researchers reported on Thursday.

Women deficient in the “sunshine vitamin” when they were diagnosedWoman in sunshine with breast cancer were 94 percent more likely to have their cancer spread and were 73 percent more likely to die than women with adequate vitamin D levels.

More than three-quarters of women with breast cancer had a vitamin D deficiency, the researchers reported to a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
